Character Name: Delilah "Lila" Bard
Canon: Shades of Magic
Canon Point: immediately post-A Gathering of Shadows
Background: An interesting thing about Lila is that she does not have a canon history; all we ever know about her past is that her father left her family when she was a baby, and she ran away from her mother (an alcoholic who had once been loving, but was no longer) to live on the streets when she was older than ten.
This never has any impact on Lila, who makes it three books without ever mentioning more than that. She legitimately does not care, and the reader isn't meant to, either.
But she also has a wiki, for more information on what's actually relevant about her.
Suitability: Delilah Bard—Lila to enemies and acquaintances, only people she trusts get the Delilah part—can engage in anything she wants. And Abraxas' world, and most especially Thorne's (which appeals to me as a player currently in the game who also wants to engage in a second faction) absolutely appeal to Lila's sensibilities. She's gone through a lot in the last year of her life, gone from being a total loner who never wants to trust or rely on anyone or even be close to another individual, to becoming someone who wants to be a part of something that needs or wants her for herself and her skills.
Those skills? Powerful but untrained elemental magic in need of a direction (see, Lila and Thorne are a match made in narrative heaven!) and a sense of adventure and risk-taking that would put characters played by Errol Flynn to shame. She's curious and brash, she leaps before looking, she wants to learn everything and see everything and do it all. She refuses to take a moment of the world holding still. Dangle a line in front of her and she will chase it; that's always been Lila, but a change in Lila recently is that she's lost her crew, the first place she belonged. She's now in search of a new one, and it's going to be the first one to claim her and want to show her how to best harness and direct her magic. I can completely see Thorne doing that, and I am very excited about it.
Powers: Lila is an Antari, the most powerful type of magic user in her canon. I'm going to nerf her a bit for the game to say that when she gets her powers back, she will keep her elemental magic abilities and some of the blood magic (most of which Lila herself has not learned at this point in her canon, so she may learn some of it later!), but lose all of her traveling-between-worlds powers. Fire is Lila's primary element, but she is capable of manipulating all five (fire, water, air, earth and bone) and has a massive amount of power but a little amount of skill and refinement. I'm hoping mages in Thorne want to teach her!
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
Once upon a time, Lila saw a tall red-haired man in a fancy coat, and she picked his pocket.
What she took from him was just a simple black stone, to the outsider's perspective. But the stone was dangerous, and Kell was trying to save multiple worlds by getting rid of it. Thus, Kell had to get it back ... and Kell met Lila that way. Kell followed Lila home. Lila taunted him. They didn't make friends, but they didn't make enemies, either—what they made was a connection, and then Lila became curious, so Lila did what Lila does best: throw caution to the wind and follow him. From there she learned that magic was real, that her sense of magic was because of how much she had (lots; whole overwhelming lots) and that there were other worlds she could follow Kell to.
From his perspective, no one else should've been able to follow him, and that meant Kell wasn't the last Antari after all—and maybe Lila was.
Pick a pocket, change three universes.
Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
She has two lines that she uses canonically that are her code of conduct, so the best way to answer this question is through quotes:"If it's worth having, it's worth taking" and "I'd rather die on an adventure than live standing still."
She means both of these utterly, though now more the second than the first one. She's a thief, and she's someone who will simply go for anything without hesitating, as explained in suitability above. Since she was a child, Lila has lived for nothing but experiences, and she's always moving forward. The end goal doesn't matter, only the journey. And as for having things? Well, that first motto was Lila's original motto, before she developed a nagging desire to maybe want to belong somewhere ... if she never goes back someplace, everything's worth just stealing. Now she's more firmly on the second motto, but she doesn't see anything wrong with stealing, either.
Lila never wants to cause harm to people, and often doesn't want to hurt, either, but she will do anything she can to keep herself safe. Until recently, she's always put herself at 100%. Now she has three people she will hold on that level, and will do anything to keep herself and them safe—and one of them's already in Thorne.
What quality or qualities do they admire most?
From an external perspective, it's not her best quality, but Lila's favorite thing about herself is her lack of fear. Taking risks isn't even second nature; it's first nature. It's just what she does. Others might worry about her never-hesitating way of life, but she loves the fact that she doesn't want to look back (even if she's growing out of loving running away).
Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Once upon a time, Lila would've answered the previous question with her lack of connection to anyone or anything. Now it's the thing she likes the least, because for the little while that she had a crew, her life really was better. She now wishes she knew how to connect to people better, and to not be so brash that she easily runs them off. Her tendency to go on her own and her inability to work with a group is something she actually wants to improve, but the idea of doing that scares her.
What is their sign, and why?
I hemmed and hawed for a literal month on this, but ended up picking The Fool. Reckless adrenaline junkie is Lila in three words and it's right there in the description!
